SLING SURGERY FOR INCONTINENCE

Sling surgery is considered one of the best options by urosurgeons  of urology clinic in Chennai for urinary incontinence treatment, especially stress incontinence. In urinary incontinence, small amounts of urine dribble due to triggers from certain movements or actions, like coughing, sneezing, or lifting. These activities create a pressure in the bladder and hence the incontinence.

During the surgery at the urology clinic in chennai, some strips of either body's tissue, synthetic material or mesh is used to create a sling around the urethra and the area of thickened muscle where the bladder connects to the urethra. This bladder sling helps to keep the urethra closed, especially when during the extra pressure created during a cough or sneeze.

There are other options apart from the sling surgery to treat stress incontinence. These include lifestyle changes like losing weight and doing Kegel exercises. But these are the options only in the initial stages when the incontinence is mild.  Sling surgery is suggested by the surgeon of an only if these options don’t seem to be working.

The incidence of incontinence is more in women compared to men. While performing the sling surgery in women, urosurgeons, use two types of sling surgery. Among the methods of vaginal sling procedures, Mid-urethral sling surgery is the most common. In this procedure, a thin strip of mesh is used to make the sling. The sling will be placed under the urethra by way of three methods. Each of the types takes almost 30 minutes. The three methods are namely, Retropubic method (tension-free vaginal tape, or TVT, method), Trans obturator method, and Single-incision mini method.

By way of the Retropubic method, a small cut is made inside the vagina. Two more tiny cuts will be made above the pubic bone. A sling is put under the pubic bone and stitches used to close the incisions. In the trans-obturator method, after the vaginal incisions, two more incisions on each side of the labia (the folds of skin on either side of the vagina) is made and then sling placed under the urethra. Single-incision mini method is much more simpler where the surgeon puts one single incision in the vagina and sling placed. No stitches are used to close the wound.
