RENAL CANCER

Kidney cancer begins in the kidneys and renal adenocarcinoma or renal cell carcinoma is by far the most common malignancies found in the kidneys. The other types include clear cell, papillary and chromophobe carcinomas. There are some other types of cancer found in less than 1% of the population and yet some more, that are only benign tumours. Kidney cancer is more commonly found in men compared to women. The disease is also more common in the age groups of 65- 70. It occurs rarely before the age of 40.

The unfortunate detail as part of the condition is timely renal cell carcinoma diagnosis . As in some cases the condition remains without any visible symptoms and is identified only incidentally while taking CT or MRI abdomen at urology consultation in chennai for completely different reasons.

Renal cell cancer risk factors

Are you at risk? You know you are at risk if:

  • You are in the age group of 65- 70. The risk increases with increasing age
  • You have a family history of cancer of the kidneys
  • You are exposed to certain heavy metals like cadmium or certain pesticides on a regular basis for instance at your workplace
  • You are a regular smoker
  • You are an obese person
  • You have a high blood pressure and haven’t been getting treatment or taking medications regularly
  • You are a patient who has been receiving long-term dialysis for kidney failure

Kidney cancer preventions:

  • Prevention is better than cure and this old- age adage is applicable even today. You don’t have to be in the risk group to go for the preventive measures since they are common to most conditions.
  • Maintain a healthy weight at all times. Do not limit the physical activity especially if your work is more of a sedentary nature
  • Avoid smoking regularly or better yet quit smoking as nicotine is harmful to most organs of your body
  • Control your blood pressure, especially if you have a family history of hypertension. Go for regular check-ups with your physician.

Kidney cancer treatment:

Treatment options will be decided based on your resilience by the kidney cancer doctor in Chennai. Like for most cancers, resecting the tumour by surgery, removing part of the kidney or the entire affected kidney, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are the most common choices as decided by the kidney specialist in Chennai.
