The prostate is a small walnut-shaped gland in men that produces seminal fluid that helps in nourishing and transporting sperm. Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common types of cancer found in men. Usually, prostate cancer grows slowly, without any early signs of prostate cancer and is initially confined to the prostate gland.  Hence it may not cause serious harm. However, in some unfortunate cases, the cancer can spread quickly. Prostate cancer has a very rare occurrence before the age of 50 and the average age of occurrence in men is around the age of 70 years.

Prostate cancer Causes:

Most of the cases are attributable to genetic reasons, either due to a family history or sudden mutations/ changes in the genes of the affected. These harmful mutations in the DNA of a person make the cells to multiply at abnormal rates, with the abnormal cells surviving better than the normal cells. This chaos alters the entire normal functioning of any being. Prostate cancer is also a by-product of one such chaos in the individual.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer Risk factors:

  • Long nights of sleeplessness
  • Testosterone therapy in older adults
  • The risk of getting prostate cancer also increases with increasing age and family history
  • Obesity also increases the chances
  • A higher degree of incidence in African American people.

Prostate cancer Symptoms:

  • Bladder pain for long periods of time or occurring very frequently.
  • There might be trouble while urinating with a decreased flow of the urine stream
  • Possible blood in semen or urine
  • Discomfort in the pelvic area
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Recurring Urinary tract infection

In some cases, the symptoms of Benign prostate hyperplasia and prostate cancer overlap, and it is difficult to distinguish. Investigative tests by the prostate cancer doctor in chennai would help in differentiating the conditions. Another difficulty in diagnosing this condition is that the symptoms sometimes never appear in the early stages.  The symptoms related to the spread of cancer to other sites (mainly bones of the pelvis and lumbar region ) from the prostate also, will not present in the initial stages. The main symptoms signalling the spread are back pain, weight loss, anaemia.

Prostate cancer Treatment:

A process known as active surveillance, that requires scheduling regular biopsies would be done for patients in whom the tumour is localized to a smaller region at chennai prostate cancer clinic.  Hormone replacement therapy like luteinizing hormone analogues has been proved to be effective. Radiotherapy or surgical removal of the prostate (part or whole) is also done but considered only in patients who have a better threshold to withstand treatments or a life expectancy of more than 10 years.

Prostate cancer Prevention:

A strategy to stay away from this condition is to adopt the right preventive measures. Screening for prostate cancer is a wise and efficient strategy with respect to this objective.  Consider screening for prostate cancer with annual PSA and digital rectal exam at chennai urology clinic, if you belong to the age group of 45- 70 years. It is advisable to seek screening earlier if there is a family history.
